Meta has announced a new Instagram feature called “Instants”, a lightweight photo-sharing tool designed to encourage faster and more spontaneous interactions between friends.

The company said the feature allows users to send casual, unfiltered photos directly through Instagram inboxes, with the images disappearing after being viewed. Alongside the rollout, Meta is also experimenting with a standalone Instants app in select countries for Android and iOS users.

The move places Instagram even closer to Snapchat-style sharing, as social media platforms continue competing to capture users seeking more private and less curated interactions online.

How Instagram Instants works

According to Meta, Instants appears inside the bottom-right corner of the Instagram inbox and gives users quick camera access to capture and send photos instantly.

They can choose to send photos either to their Close Friends or those who follow both of them, along with the ability to caption them before sending. But once sent, the image cannot be edited anymore.

The photos will show up as stacked messages within the direct messages, which will then disappear once viewed by the other party. Friends can like or comment on the photos through Instagram Direct messages. According to Meta, the new feature is deliberately built for less editing and more casual sharing than content creation.

The firm has additionally added some extra features connected with Instants. The shared photos are saved privately in an archive for a year so that the user can later make a Recap Story from older Instants. The user can even get an “Undo” message instantly right after sending the photo.

Meta also testing standalone Instants app

Alongside the Instagram feature, Meta confirmed it is rolling out a separate Instants app in select regions.

The standalone app is aimed at offering faster camera access while syncing directly with Instagram accounts and inboxes. Users can log in using their existing Instagram credentials, and shared content remains visible across both platforms.

Meta described the app as experimental and said the experience could evolve depending on user feedback. The launch reflects a wider trend among major social platforms toward private sharing, disappearing content and quicker mobile-first interactions.

Teen safety and privacy tools included

Meta stated that the current Instagram privacy tools and content moderation capabilities would carry over to Instants. In addition, users would still have access to functions like blocking, muting, and restricting people.

As for teenagers, the feature is compatible with Instagram Teen Accounts and the Instagram Family Centre’s parental supervision options. This means that there would be joint screen time limits, automatic Sleep Mode from 10 pm to 7 am, and alerts for parents if their monitored children download the Instants application.

In any case, the new feature comes at a time when Meta is constantly trying to redesign Instagram around features related to privacy and direct messaging, which young users have increasingly preferred in recent years.
