The Delhi government has introduced a set of austerity and fuel-saving measures, including work-from-home (WFH) arrangements for government employees, following concerns linked to global geopolitical tensions and rising pressure on energy resources.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the decisions are part of efforts aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to reduce petroleum consumption.

Two days of work from home for government staff

Speaking about the new measures, Gupta was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times, "At government level, two days will be work from home every week."

She also said the private sector would be encouraged to adopt similar steps.

“Private sector will be advised to give work from home. Labour dept will monitor this. They should give work from home,” she added.

Officials said online meetings would be promoted and vehicle usage reduced as part of the wider plan.

Middle East conflict and energy concerns in focus

The measures come against the backdrop of disruptions linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The war, which began on February 28, affected shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global oil movement, raising concerns over broader energy-related challenges.

According to reports, Delhi government ministers and senior officials had already started implementing fuel-conservation measures earlier this week.

Focus on public transport and reduced vehicle use

The government has also decided to reduce the use of official vehicles and encourage public transport, carpooling and fuel-saving alternatives.

Gupta urged people to rely more on Metro services and buses, saying such steps could help reduce fuel use while also easing traffic congestion and air pollution.

Departments including the Public Works Department, Delhi Jal Board, and the irrigation and flood control department have also issued instructions to prioritise virtual meetings, support electric mobility and observe a weekly “No Car Day”.
