A new rule linked to WhatsApp usage has come into effect in India from March 1, 2026, introducing what is being called "SIM binding". The change aims to tighten account security by ensuring that a user’s WhatsApp account remains directly connected to an active SIM card running on the primary device.

The move has drawn attention among users, particularly those who frequently rely on linked devices or travel often.

What is WhatsApp SIM binding?

WhatsApp accounts have always been connected to a mobile number, but users could continue using the app even if the SIM card was no longer active on the device after initial verification. SIM binding changes this system.

Under the new requirement, users must verify that the SIM card associated with their WhatsApp number is actively inserted and functioning on the phone. Continued access to the platform will depend on this verification process.

The change effectively strengthens the link between a user’s identity, their SIM card and the device being used.

Impact on linked devices

One of the biggest changes is expected to affect WhatsApp’s Linked Devices feature. Users accessing WhatsApp Web or desktop versions may experience more frequent logouts.

Reports suggest the web version could require reauthentication approximately every six hours if the primary device is not verified through SIM binding. This means users may need to keep their phone nearby for uninterrupted access across devices.

Reason behind the introduction of rule

The authorities have cited the increasing number of scams using WhatsApp as the primary reason for the introduction of the rule. As the SIM cards in the country are tied to identification documents, the move to bind the SIM to the particular device should make it difficult for scammers to operate the account virtually.

The move aims to ensure the user who registered the account stays physically connected to the account.

What users need to do

In order to continue using the service smoothly, the user needs to:

Keep the SIM card inserted into the primary phone.

Ensure the app is updated to the latest version.

It has been reported that WhatsApp has initiated the testing of SIM binding with its beta releases of Android and iOS. This is considered to be a major move for the App, especially for people living in India and using multiple devices.
