What began as a normal birthday delivery soon became a nightmare on Monday night in Mumbaiâs Goregaon (West). Gas-filled balloons burst inside a residential elevator in Amol Tower, injuring two people and leaving everyone in a state of panic. The explosion inside the packed elevator has been captured in CCTV camera footage that has gone viral on social media.
What happened inside the lift
At about 10:30 pm, the deliveryman entered the elevator with 10 to 12 gas-filled balloons. Shortly after, 21-year-old student Himani Tapriya and another resident entered the elevator. Soon, the balloons burst, leaving everyone with burn injuries.
Tapriya received burn injuries to her right arm, neck, and stomach. The delivery man, 32-year-old Raju Kumar Mahato, also received burn injuries from the explosion.

Balloons blasting inside a lift in Mumbai. Yes PARTY gas balloons.
Good that lift was not filled to capacity, else people would have got really serious burn injuries.

Victim had just arrived from Surat
Tapriya, in her complaint, stated, âI had just arrived at the building from Surat and took the lift to go to my auntâs flat when a person carrying around a dozen balloons entered the lift. Suddenly, the balloons in his hand exploded, causing serious injuries to my right arm, neck and stomach.â
Tapriya received immediate treatment and is now out of danger, said the police.
Case of negligence registered
After conducting a preliminary investigation, a case of negligence was registered against balloon shop owner T K Jaiswal by the Goregaon police. The police claim that one of his employees was dispatched to deliver the balloons without adequate safety instructions or equipment.
âJaiswal has been booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Section 125 (negligence) and has been served a notice. He did not provide safety instructions to the delivery person, which led to the incident. Mahato was carrying around 10 to 12 gas-filled balloons that were ordered by a building resident, Arpit Jain, for a birthday celebration in his familyâ. The Times of India quoted an officer from Goregaon police station as saying.
Safety concerns raised
Police said that it is suspected that the incident occurred because of careless handling and a lack of safety precautions while transporting gas-filled balloons, particularly in a confined space such as an elevator. A case has been registered against the employer, and the matter is still under investigation to determine if there was any violation of safety norms.
This incident has brought to the fore the safety concerns of using gas-filled balloons in multi-story buildings, particularly when safety norms are not taken seriously.
