IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers has stepped down from his role with immediate effect, the airline’s parent company, InterGlobe Aviation Ltd., announced on Tuesday.

The resignation comes months after the airline faced a major operational crisis in December that drew strong public attention and scrutiny from government authorities. Elbers, who was leading India’s largest airline, decided to step down following the aftermath of the disruption that affected IndiGo’s operations.

InterGlobe Aviation confirmed the development in an official statement, saying that Elbers’ resignation has come into effect immediately.

Who is Pieter Elbers?

Pieter Elbers is a Dutch aviation executive who has been serving as the CEO of IndiGo, India’s largest domestic airline. He is currently based in Delhi NCR and works from the airline’s corporate headquarters in Gurgaon.

Elbers, 55, is widely known in the aviation industry. Before joining IndiGo, he served as the CEO of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines from 2014 to 2022.

He was born in 1970 in South Holland in the Netherlands. Elbers studied at Fontys University of Applied Sciences in Venlo, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Logistics Management. He later completed an MBA from the Open University of the Netherlands. In 2006, he also attended an executive education programme at Columbia Business School, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Elbers began his aviation career with KLM in 1992, where he started as a supervisor for aircraft loading at Schiphol Airport. Over the next few years, he held several managerial roles both in the Netherlands and internationally, including postings in Japan, Greece and Italy.

In 2005, he returned to the Netherlands and was appointed Senior Vice President of Network and Alliances at KLM. In 2011, he joined the airline’s board of managing directors as Chief Operating Officer. Three years later, he was promoted to President and CEO of KLM.

In June 2022, IndiGo announced Elbers as its new CEO, replacing Ronojoy Dutta after his retirement. Elbers officially took charge as the airline’s chief executive in September 2022.
