Kolkata saw another drop in temperature as the mercury plummeted to 14.4 degrees Celsius on Saturday morning, which is roughly 2.5 degrees lower than the average temperature. According to the weather office, the chill is expected to continue until Sunday, especially during early morning and night periods, before the temperatures start rising steadily from next week.

Cool mornings, mild days

The maximum temperature in Kolkata on Friday was 26.5 degrees Celsius, which is roughly 1.8 degrees lower than the average temperature, while the humidity levels were recorded to be between 38% and 78%. The day saw misty mornings and clear skies, which is expected to continue over the weekend. Winter’s last touch across South Bengal

Weather officials indicated that this chill would remain from dawn till night through this week. However, before that, this cold wave will increase further in South Bengal over the weekend. By Sunday night, several districts in south Bengal will experience a fall in temperatures by another two to three degrees Celsius. While in coastal districts, temperatures will hover between 13 and 15 degrees, in western districts, temperatures will drop further and will even reach near 10 degrees.

At present, there is no dense fog warning issued across the state. However, there’s a possibility of light or moderate levels of fog during mornings. The districts of North Bengal will experience shallow or moderate levels of fog, while districts such as West Burdwan and Birbhum in South Bengal will experience more intense levels of fog for the next two days.

North Bengal remains colder

However, in the hills, which include Darjeeling, the temperature will remain between 5 and 6 degrees Celsius until Sunday. In Kalimpong and the plains surrounding it, the minimum temperature will range between 10 and 12 degrees Celsius. Although the weather is cold, there are no warnings issued for any place.

How's the week ahead?

From Friday until next Thursday, Kolkata and neighbouring areas such as Salt Lake, Howrah and Dum Dum are likely to experience a clear sky and bright sunshine. There might be a slight drop in the night temperatures in the next 24 hours, but thereafter, the temperatures are likely to remain constant. By mid-week, the maximum temperatures are expected to increase to 28 or 29 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperatures will remain between 15 and 17 degrees.

As there are no chances of rainfall and only a mild chill lingering in the early hours, the city is in for a smooth transition from winter to warmer months.
