The first day of Baisakh has arrived with a harsh reminder of summer’s strength across Bengal. From early morning on Wednesday, the sun has been relentless, bringing with it rising heat, sweat and visible discomfort. The conditions echo the familiar seasonal shift, with temperatures already climbing sharply even before the day progresses.

According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, Tuesday’s maximum temperature in Kolkata stood at 36 degrees Celsius, slightly above normal by 0.3 degrees. The minimum temperature was recorded at 26.9 degrees Celsius, which is 1.3 degrees higher than the seasonal average.

Humidity remains a key factor behind the uneasy weather. Relative humidity levels are expected to range between 94 per cent at the highest and 41 per cent at the lowest. This combination of heat and moisture is likely to continue causing discomfort throughout the day.

Kalbaishakhi possibility after afternoon

There may, however, be some change in weather conditions later on Wednesday. The Met office has indicated a possibility of Kalbaishakhi in parts of South Bengal after the afternoon hours. Rain accompanied by thunderstorms could develop, offering temporary relief.

Districts in western South Bengal, including Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram and West Midnapore, are expected to have higher chances of rainfall. Kolkata and both North and South 24 Parganas may also receive scattered showers.

Thunderstorm activity to intensify later this week

The impact of thunderstorms is likely to increase on Thursday and Friday. Several districts, including Purulia, Bankura, West Midnapore, Jhargram, East and West Bardhaman, Birbhum and Murshidabad, may witness light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms. Gusty winds could reach speeds of 40 to 50 km per hour during this period.

On Saturday, light rain is expected in Birbhum, Murshidabad and Nadia. Despite rainfall, humidity-driven discomfort may continue.

Rain forecast for North Bengal as well

North Bengal is also expected to see unsettled weather. On Wednesday, districts such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri may receive rain.

Till Friday, light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and winds of 30 to 40 km per hour is likely across all districts. Malda, North Dinajpur and South Dinajpur may also experience scattered thunderstorms. Temperatures in the region could rise by up to 2 degrees Celsius over the next 48 hours.
