The southwest monsoon has finally arrived in South Bengal, bringing rain-bearing clouds across most parts of West Bengal. According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, the monsoon entered South Bengal on Friday, June 12, just three days after making its way into the northern districts of the state. Except for western Purulia, almost the entire state is now under the influence of moisture-laden monsoon clouds.
Monsoon enters Bengal after multiple delays
The monsoon's journey into India this year was marked by repeated delays. The India Meteorological Department had initially projected its arrival over the country on May 26. When that did not happen, the expected date was revised to May 28 and later to May 31. Eventually, the southwest monsoon made its onset over Kerala on June 4.

Why did the monsoon advance faster this year?
Weather experts point out that the southwest monsoon usually reaches North Bengal within a week of entering India through Kerala. This year followed that pattern.
However, the movement of monsoon winds from North Bengal to South Bengal is often slower. After entering the country, the system tends to lose some of its initial strength, which can delay its southward spread across eastern India.
This year, favourable atmospheric conditions helped maintain the monsoon's momentum, allowing it to advance into South Bengal without significant obstacles.
