In the digital age, OTP fraud is common. But asking for an OTP during the SIR form fill-up process? As soon as such complaints surfaced, the Election Commission stepped in. It clearly stated that the SIR process never requires an OTP. In simple terms, if anyone asks for it, it is a case of fraud.

The Kadambagachi area of North 24 Parganas witnessed chaos after allegations emerged that OTPs were being demanded during the SIR form fill-up. Residents claimed that the accused introduced themselves as members of the Lokbandhu Party and were assisting with the form fill-up. They first asked for mobile numbers, which did not raise suspicion initially. People shared their numbers. But when an OTP arrived on their phones, they became doubtful. Locals immediately detained the individuals and informed the police. They were certain that asking for OTPs in the name of the SIR form fill-up was an act of fraud.

Following this, on Monday, November 17, the office of the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal issued a notice clarifying that OTP verification is never required during the form fill-up process.

The statement said, “Election Commission of India or the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, West Bengal do NOT ever ask for any OTP in any mobile no. for any work related to Special Intensive Revision (SIR) or Revision of Electoral Rolls whatsoever.”
