Kolkata already has fewer roads compared to its needs. The city's population density has increased over the past decade. As a result, traffic jams persist during busy hours on the roads. There is also the problem of potholes. Broken roads are becoming accident-prone. To solve all these problems, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has planned to widen multiple roads.
Speaking on this matter on Monday, Mayor Firhad Hakim said, “We have asked the police to examine which roads are in bad condition and provide a list. We will repair those roads. Paver blocks will also be installed on several roads.”
According to Kolkata Municipal Corporation sources, the roads department has also planned to widen multiple roads in the city. A decision has been made to widen a bye lane of Panditiya Road in Rashbehari, South Kolkata, by 30 feet.

Once this work is completed, traffic congestion will reduce in the area between Rashbehari More and Gariahat. A decision has been made to repair roads in the area adjacent to EM Bypass, following the model of 'Ring Road'. Approval has been given to repair a new 30-foot-wide road on the western side of Milan Mela, adjacent to EM Bypass. This road will connect through Science City to the Park Circus Connector.
Multiple engineers from Kolkata Municipal Corporation's roads department have informed that the number of vehicles on Kolkata's roads keeps increasing. However, road repairs in Kolkata have not been carried out proportionately to match that growth rate. Therefore, after surveying this matter, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has decided to widen various roads.
Under this plan, there will also be a new 30-foot wide road connecting EM Bypass and Prince Anwar Shah Road under Jibanananda Bridge to link with Selimpur Road.
