West Bengal carries out big police reshuffle, 23 IPS and 3 WBPS officers shifted before Assembly polls

The state government has carried out a major administrative reshuffle ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, transferring 23 IPS and 3 WBPS officers.

A significant reshuffle has been carried out in West Bengal's administration ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The state government has ordered the transfer of 23 IPS officers and 3 WBPS officers. While the timing of the move has drawn attention due to the upcoming polls, officials have described it as a routine administrative exercise.

This reshuffle has resulted in changes across several key positions in districts, ranges, and police commissionerates. A number of senior officers have been transferred, and some have been entrusted with additional responsibilities, affecting important areas of policing and administration across the state.

Key officer transfers

As per the transfer order, Medinipur Range DIG Anoop Jaiswal has been appointed as the new IGP of the state CID. Arijit Sinha has been retained as DIG of Medinipur Range and has also been given additional charge of the Jangalmahal Battalion. Kalimpong Superintendent of Police Shrihari Pandey has been assigned the responsibility of DIG of the North Bengal IB division.

Changes in police commissionerates

Several changes have also been made in major police commissionerates. Howrah Police Commissionerate's DC Central Biswajit Mahato has been transferred to the post of DC Special Branch at the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate. DC Traffic of Howrah, Sujata Kumari Binapani, has been posted as DC Headquarters of the same commissionerate. Similar reshuffles have been carried out in Howrah, Bidhannagar, Barrackpore, Asansol, Siliguri, and Chandannagar. According to police sources, the newly appointed officers are expected to join their new posts shortly.
