US President Donald Trump pitched a new ‘Trump Gold Card’ visa programme to resist the exit of skilled and talented individuals after completing their studies in the United States. At the launch, Trump claimed that this new move would end the “ridiculous” system that forces talented foreign students to leave the country after completion of their academic pursuits.

What did Trump say about Indian students?

President Trump said that meritorious international students face problems regarding immigration, and his new legislation would end all of that. Along with that, the new ‘Gold Card’ visa would give American employers "certainty" in hiring talented international students, NDTV reported.

Trump said, "It is a gift of getting somebody great coming into our country, because we think these will be some tremendous people that wouldn't be allowed to stay. They graduate from college, you have to go back to India, they have to go back to China, they have to go back to France. They have to go back to wherever they came from. Very hard to stay. It's a shame. It's a ridiculous thing. We're taking care of that."

President Trump said that top US universities like Wharton, Harvard, and MIT can buy the new ‘Gold Card’ to keep the students they hire in the United States.

How much would the ‘Gold Card’ cost?

The Trump ‘Gold Card’ would cost $1 million for individuals, and $2 million for corporations. The card would allow firms to retain an employee who will go through complete vetting. The vetting process would cost an additional $15,000, said Howard Lutnick, United States Secretary of Commerce, as quoted by NDTV.

However, the card won’t be for one-time use. The ‘Trump Gold Card’ will enable the requisite employee to be on the path to attain citizenship in five years. After that, the requisite corporation will be able to use the card for another employee.
