Highlighting India's key role in global technology, CEO of OpenAI Sam Altman said on Thursday that the country is currently leading the world in AI adoption. He noted that India is set to become one of the largest markets for this technology.
Altman emphasised that India is not just taking part in the AI revolution; it is leading it. Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, he expressed optimism about the country's digital future and pointed out that the work happening in India's tech scene is "amazing" and setting the pace globally. He described India as a major driver of future innovation that will significantly influence how technology evolves around the world.

"It is amazing to be here, obviously the work happening in India and the adoption of AI is leading the world, and I can’t wait to see what goes next," Altman told ANI.
OpenAI has gained its second-largest user base from India. The company opened its first office in New Delhi last year.
Strategic partnership to drive AI-powered innovation
On the sidelines of the summit, Tata Group, Tata Consultancy Services and OpenAI announced a strategic partnership to drive AI-powered innovation across enterprise, consumer, and social sectors.
This collaboration will focus on powering AI-led innovation within Tata Group companies, pushing AI transformation across industries worldwide, and establishing AI infrastructure.
Altman highlighted that the partnership will create industry-specific Agentic AI solutions. It will combine OpenAI’s AI platforms with TCS's knowledge of industries and deep AI expertise.
Altman acknowledges confidence in human adaptability
Addressing concerns about automation, Altman acknowledged that AI will affect the job market but expressed confidence in human adaptability. He stated that technological changes throughout history have always created new and more meaningful work. "It will definitely impact the job market, but we always find new things to do, and I have no doubt we will find lots of better ones this time," he said.

Altman also mentioned that OpenAI has its second-largest user base in India and opened its first office in New Delhi last year. "It is amazing to be here. The adoption of AI is leading the world, and I can’t wait to see what comes next," he was quoted as saying by Deccan Chronicle.
