A man in his 30s allegedly forced his way into his former wife’s home in Hyderabad and stabbed her to death, police said. Investigators believe he was angry that a domestic violence case filed by her had stopped him from returning to Canada, where he had been working at an IT firm.

The 29-year-old woman, also an IT professional, had remarried after their divorce. In a complaint, her second husband stated that she was three months pregnant. However, police said this has not yet been confirmed and that a post-mortem report is awaited.

The couple had married in 2022 in India, after which the man moved to Canada and the woman later joined him. "Some differences arose between the couple, and she later returned to India. She subsequently filed a domestic violence case against him in Maharashtra," an official said. They divorced in 2024, and the woman remarried in April 2025.

The man returned to India in March 2025 after his mother’s death. Police said a look-out circular had been issued against him due to the domestic violence case and his passport had been suspended, preventing him from going back to Canada. He was unemployed and living at his parents’ home in Peddapalli district, Telangana. Officials said he blamed his ex-wife for the mental distress faced by him and his family and even held her responsible for his mother’s death.

Planned attack and arrest

Police said the man planned the crime in advance. He allegedly tracked his ex-wife’s address through social media, moved to Hyderabad two months ago, and stayed in a hostel. "He had also recced the victim's apartment recently," an official said.

On Wednesday, he went to her apartment carrying a bag containing two knives, a drilling machine and a can with five litres of petrol. He entered her room, locked it from inside and stabbed her multiple times in the head, killing her on the spot.

Her mother-in-law was on the balcony at the time. Family members alerted the police. Officers found that the man had poured petrol around the room and locked himself inside a toilet. He allegedly threatened to set the place on fire. After some persuasion, police managed to get him out and took him into custody.

CCTV footage aired by local television channels showed the man walking through the apartment corridor with a bag shortly before the attack.
