US President Donald Trump has criticised the Senate after lawmakers approved a war powers resolution aimed at limiting military action against Iran. Calling the vote “poorly timed” and “meaningless”, Trump said the move had complicated ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

The Senate passed the resolution by a 50-48 vote. Although the measure does not carry the force of law, it marks the first time the chamber has approved such a resolution on Iran.

The vote comes as the United States and Iran continue discussions on the technical details of an agreement intended to end the conflict in West Asia.

'Senators have just made my job more difficult'

Reacting to the Senate decision on Truth Social, Trump said the vote had weakened his negotiating position.

“So, I have Iran on the “ropes,” ready to go down for the fall, willing to give us practically anything, and for the first time in decades, respecting the hell out of the United States and its President, ME, and the US Senate decides to have a poorly timed and meaningless War Powers Act Vote, telling the Number One Sponser of Terror in the World that the United States doesn’t like what I am doing to them, and I must stop,” he wrote.

“Iran asked my people, “what does that all mean?” These Senators have just made my job more difficult, but I will get it done, one way or the other, because I always get it done!”

Trump also described the four Republican senators who supported the resolution as “losers.”

Republicans break ranks

The four Republican senators who voted in favour of the measure were Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Bill Cassidy and Rand Paul.

Earlier, a similar resolution had passed the House of Representatives with support from both Democrats and some Republicans.

The vote has highlighted differences within the Republican Party over the administration's approach toward Iran.

Senator Ted Cruz had earlier praised Trump's military action against Iran but warned against any agreement that could strengthen Tehran.

“If the result of all that is to be an Iranian regime — still run by Islamists who chant ‘death to America’ — now receiving billions of dollars, being able to enrich uranium & develop nuclear weapons, and having effective control over the Strait of Hormuz, then that outcome would be a disastrous mistake,” Cruz wrote on X.
