Cristiano Ronaldo's relationship with records has become so routine that football fans almost expect history to be rewritten every time he steps onto the pitch. Yet, even by his lofty standards, the Portugal captain produced another remarkable feat at the FIFA World Cup 2026. During Portugal's emphatic 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in Houston, the 41-year-old forward became the second-oldest player to score in the tournament's history and the first footballer ever to score across six different World Cup editions.
The result also came as a much-needed boost for Portugal after its disappointing 1-1 draw against DR Congo in the opening game.

Cristiano Ronaldo wasted little time announcing himself against Uzbekistan, finding the net in the sixth minute before adding a second goal later in the first half.
At 41 years and 138 days old, Ronaldo now sits second on the list of oldest goalscorers in World Cup history, only behind Cameroonian legend Roger Milla, who was 42 years and 39 days old when he scored against Russia in 1994.
The Portuguese superstar also overtook his former teammate Pepe as the oldest Portuguese player to score in the tournament. What makes the achievement even more extraordinary is its longevity.
Ronaldo has now scored in six separate World Cup editions spanning two decades, from Germany in 2006 to North America in 2026. No player in football history has ever managed such consistency at the biggest stage.

Roberto Martinez's men played with greater fluidity and purpose, overwhelming Uzbekistan from the opening whistle. Nuno Mendes doubled the lead in the 17th minute before Ronaldo completed his brace in the 39th minute.
An unfortunate own goal by Uzbek goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov further widened the gap before Rafael Leao added the fifth goal late in the second half.
The commanding victory not only revived Portugal's campaign but also significantly improved its chances of reaching the knockout rounds.

A new milestone in an already legendary career
The night carried additional significance for Ronaldo as he surpassed Portuguese icon Eusébio to become his country's all-time leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history.
For years, debates around Ronaldo have centred on age, decline and succession planning. Yet the veteran continues to answer every question with numbers.
His performance against Uzbekistan was a reminder that while football eventually moves on from every generation, Cristiano Ronaldo remains an exception to almost every rule.
At 41, he is no longer merely extending his career. He is redefining what football longevity can look like.
