Europe is reeling under an intense heatwave, with temperatures crossing 40C in several regions and hospitals struggling to cope with a surge in heat-related emergencies. Amid the crisis, Paris has imposed a temporary ban on drinking alcohol in public spaces and on takeaway alcohol sales, citing public health concerns. Bars and restaurants, however, are exempt from the restrictions.

Why did Paris ban public drinking?

The temporary restrictions were introduced after emergency services reported a sharp rise in heat-related illnesses, including dehydration, heatstroke and cardiac emergencies

As per Hindustan Times report, officials said consuming alcohol outdoors during extreme temperatures increases the likelihood of medical emergencies, placing additional strain on hospitals already operating near capacity. The measure is intended to reduce avoidable health risks until the heatwave eases.

What does alcohol do to your body in extreme heat?

Doctors warn that drinking alcohol during a heatwave can significantly increase health risks.

It causes dehydration

Alcohol acts as a diuretic, meaning it increases urine production. Combined with heavy sweating during hot weather, this can lead to rapid dehydration.

It puts extra strain on the heart

Heat causes blood vessels to widen to help cool the body. Alcohol has a similar effect, which can lower blood pressure and force the heart to work harder.

This may increase the risk of dizziness, fainting and, in vulnerable individuals, serious cardiac events.

It raises the risk of heatstroke

Alcohol interferes with the body's ability to regulate temperature and can make it harder to recognise warning signs of heat exhaustion or heatstroke, delaying treatment.

It affects judgment

Alcohol impairs decision-making and coordination, increasing the chances of risky behaviour such as swimming in unsafe conditions or prolonged exposure to the sun.

Europe battles record-breaking temperatures

The heatwave has broken June temperature records across several European countries, including France, Germany, the UK and Switzerland.

Authorities have issued red alerts, cancelled public events and urged people to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak hours and check on elderly or vulnerable individuals.

How to stay safe during a heatwave

Health experts recommend:

Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Avoid excessive alcohol and caffeinated beverages.

Stay indoors or in shaded, well-ventilated spaces during the hottest hours.

Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.

Watch for signs of heat exhaustion, such as dizziness, nausea and excessive sweating, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.
