Two Indian nationals were shot dead in an alleged targeted attack in the Covo area of Bergamo in Italy, police said. The incident took place on Friday but came to light on Sunday. Authorities have launched an investigation and are examining possible motives, including personal enmity.
The deceased have been identified as Rajinder Singh (48) and Gurmeet Singh (48). A third person present at the spot narrowly escaped the attack. Police said the assailant fled the scene immediately after opening fire.
Attack near gurdwara after Baisakhi event
According to police and local sources, the victims had gone to a nearby gurdwara to help organise a special programme marking Baisakhi. The shooting took place when they were returning after completing their work.
Eyewitnesses said the attacker opened fire in front of the gurdwara. Around 10 bullet shells were later recovered from the spot. Investigators believe the attack was premeditated and carried out at close range.
Preliminary findings suggest that the assailant may also be of Indian origin and was known to visit the same gurdwara regularly. Police suspect that three individuals were targeted during the incident, but one managed to escape without injury.
Probe on, motive yet unclear
Police officials said the exact reason behind the attack is still not known. However, early indications point to a possible old rivalry or personal dispute.
"The attack appears to have been carried out in a planned manner. We are examining all possible angles, including prior enmity," local police sources said.
The local administration has intensified the probe. CCTV footage from nearby areas is being reviewed to identify the accused and track his movements before and after the incident.
No arrests had been reported at the time of filing this report. Authorities have assured that all efforts are being made to bring the accused to justice.
The incident has caused concern among the local Indian community, especially as it occurred near a place of worship and during a festive period.
