A fresh controversy has surfaced in the Indian Premier League (IPL), with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expressing strong displeasure over what it describes as a growing “girlfriend culture” among players during the tournament. Reports suggest that several high-profile Indian cricketers, including Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, have been seen travelling and staying with their partners during the ongoing season. The board now appears ready to step in with stricter regulations.
BCCI’s concerns over image and security
According to multiple reports, the BCCI’s primary concern revolves around the league’s image and potential risks to confidentiality. Some of the players’ partners are reportedly social media influencers, with a few allegedly linked to promotions of betting platforms in the past. This has raised red flags within the board, which fears reputational damage to both the IPL and Indian cricket.

Additionally, officials are worried about the possibility of sensitive team information being leaked. With unrestricted access to team environments, such as buses and hotels, there is a perceived risk that internal strategies or discussions could unintentionally reach the public domain. The BCCI believes such scenarios could compromise the integrity of the competition.
Influencer links and betting concerns raise alarm
The involvement of influencers has added another layer to the controversy. The board is particularly cautious about indirect associations with betting-related promotions, which are strictly regulated in cricket. Even if players themselves are not involved, any perceived connection through close associates could harm the credibility of the tournament. This has prompted calls within the board for tighter scrutiny of those allowed access to team environments.
Alleged rule violations and internal confusion
A senior BCCI official has highlighted repeated instances where team protocols were seemingly bypassed. Reports indicate that team buses have been delayed to accommodate players’ partners, while hotel stays alongside players have also become common. Surprisingly, in certain cases, permissions were allegedly granted by Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) officials after players cited “official relationships.”

This has left top administrators puzzled. As one official noted, there is no formal provision allowing girlfriends to accompany players. Existing rules clearly permit only wives and immediate family members under defined conditions. The board is now investigating how such permissions were granted in the first place.
The role of the Anti-Corruption Unit in granting clearances has also come under scrutiny. Questions are being raised about whether due diligence was followed before allowing non-family members access to controlled environments. The BCCI is expected to review these processes and possibly tighten approval mechanisms to prevent misuse or misinterpretation of guidelines.
New rules likely across IPL and international cricket
In response, the BCCI is preparing to introduce stricter guidelines to regulate player conduct off the field. These rules are expected to be discussed in the next governing meeting and could extend beyond the IPL to include Indian team tours as well.

Although IPL franchises operate independently, the BCCI intends to enforce a uniform policy across all teams. The aim is to maintain discipline, safeguard the league’s integrity, and prevent similar controversies in the future.
