A moderate earthquake struck parts of Jammu and Kashmir early on Monday, February 2, 2026, briefly shaking residents awake and causing panic in several districts of the Kashmir Valley.
The tremor occurred at around 5:35 am IST and measured between 4.6 and 4.8 on the Richter scale, according to preliminary estimates from seismic monitoring agencies. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the quake and said its epicentre was near Pattan in Baramulla district, at a shallow depth of about 10 kilometres.
Because of the shallow depth, the tremors were felt across a wide area, including Srinagar, Baramulla, Sopore, Ganderbal, Pulwama and Budgam, as well as nearby regions. Despite the strong shaking felt by residents, there were no immediate reports of casualties, injuries or major damage.

What residents experienced
The earthquake occurred in the seismically active Himalayan region, which frequently experiences tremors due to ongoing tectonic plate movement. According to NCS data, the quakeâs magnitude was around 4.7, with slight variations reported by other monitoring platforms â a common occurrence during initial assessments.
As per some local reports, many residents said the tremor woke them from sleep, with reports of shaking beds, rattling doors and swaying household items. In several areas, people stepped out of their homes as a precaution and gathered in open spaces until the shaking stopped. The tremor lasted only a few seconds, but its early-morning timing increased anxiety.
Local media and eyewitnesses from Srinagar and north Kashmir described the quake as âbrief but sharpâ, though there were no confirmed reports of building collapses or serious damage.

Following the tremor, district administrations and disaster management teams began checking the situation on the ground. Officials said surveys were carried out to assess buildings, roads and public infrastructure. Essential services such as electricity, water supply, mobile networks and emergency services remained fully functional.
As per a report of the Logical Indian,âSo far, there are no reports of loss of life or major damage,â an official said, adding that authorities remain alert for possible aftershocks and have advised residents to report any signs of damage.
Earthquake in Andaman and Nicobar Islands
According to the National Centre for Seismology, another earthquake was felt in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Monday morning. The tremor was felt at 3:31 AM, measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale. Its epicenter was 10 kilometers deep in the Nicobar region.
