Juneteenth is an annual celebration held every June 19, which celebrates the date when African American slaves in Galveston, Texas were informed about their emancipation, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect.

AFRAM returns for landmark 50th anniversary
Among the biggest attractions is AFRAM, Baltimore's flagship African American cultural festival, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary at Druid Hill Park.
The three-day event will feature live performances, cultural showcases, community organisations, food vendors and family activities. Scheduled performers include Charlie Wilson, Mario, SWV, Tamia, Chloe Bailey, PJ Morton and several other artists.
The festival remains one of the largest African American celebrations on the East Coast and is expected to draw large crowds throughout the Juneteenth weekend.
Museums spotlight Black history and culture
Several Baltimore institutions are hosting special Juneteenth programs focused on history, storytelling and artistic expression. The Walters Art Museum will celebrate both Juneteenth and Black Music Month with performances by movement artist Jabari Exum and internationally recognised kora player Amadou Kouyate. Visitors will also have access to exhibitions highlighting Afrofuturist art and design.
The Reginald F. Lewis Museum will offer free programming exploring themes of freedom, equity and social justice through discussions, workshops and cultural presentations.
Meanwhile, the American Visionary Art Museum will host family-oriented activities celebrating the work and legacy of Black artists through tours, exhibitions and community events.
Community events bring celebrations outdoors
Outside museums and cultural organizations, the people of Baltimore will have access to outdoor events that promote wellness and celebrate their rich history and sense of community.
Run-Up-to-Juneteenth 5K & Mile Walk event will be organized at Druid Hill Park where participants can engage in fitness activities while raising money for students' success programs.
Rhythm Liberation Fest at the waterfront area of Baltimore will be another major cultural event in which music concerts, local merchants, and cultural activities centered around black heritage will take place.
Baltimore County's Benjamin Banneker Historical Park and Museum will host an exhibition and presentation about Benjamin Banneker, a famous African-American scientist and surveyor.

Veterans' stories take centre stage
Another meaningful event on the agenda will be Our Stories, Our Truth organised by StoryCorps Baltimore.

Juneteenth events will also take place across Maryland, such as those to be hosted in Annapolis, National Harbor, Salisbury, Carroll County, and other locations.
