WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new feature that allows users to connect without sharing their mobile numbers. The update, long anticipated by users, is designed to make communication simpler while strengthening privacy, Newspoint stated in its report.
Messaging without phone numbers
The key addition is the ability to create a unique username. With this feature, users can send messages and make voice or video calls without revealing their phone numbers. This marks a shift in how people can interact on the platform, especially with contacts they may not want to share personal details with.

The feature will be available on both Android and iOS devices. However, it is not yet accessible to everyone, the report said.
Limited rollout for now
According to a report by WABetaInfo, the username feature is currently limited to a select group of users who have installed the latest version of the app.
The company is taking a phased approach to the rollout. This allows it to monitor performance and address any technical issues before making the feature widely available. A broader release is expected in the coming weeks.
Rules for creating a username
WhatsApp has also set clear guidelines for choosing usernames. These rules are aimed at maintaining consistency and preventing misuse on the platform:
Your username must contain at least one character.
You may use only lowercase letters (a-z), numbers, dots and underscores.
The username must be between 3 and 35 characters in length.
You cannot start your username with "www."
