A two-year-old boy's death in Indiana has led to the arrest of his parents, with investigators pointing to prolonged neglect and unsafe living conditions.
The child, identified as Erik Reichard, was found unresponsive at his home in Tell City on March 31, Hindustan Times reported. Authorities say the circumstances surrounding his death raise serious concerns about the environment he was living in.
Investigators alleged that due to extreme hunger, the toddler had been eating pieces of diapers and drywall before his death.

Delay in seeking help raises questions
According to police, the child's father called emergency services reporting that the boy was not breathing, HT cited a Fox News report. However, officers were told the toddler had last been seen alive around 11 pm the previous night, suggesting a delay of nearly 14 hours before help was sought.
When first responders arrived, CPR was attempted but the child was pronounced dead at the scene. A detective later noted that the boy had likely been dead for several hours and showed visible signs of prolonged distress.
Court records indicate the toddler was severely malnourished and dehydrated. He reportedly weighed around 15 pounds, significantly below the expected weight for his age. Investigators also observed multiple sores or bug bites on his body.
Disturbing conditions inside the home
Authorities described the living conditions as unsafe and unsanitary. Officers found faeces on the floors in children's rooms, along with debris such as pieces of diapers, dirt, and signs of insect infestation.
In one room, a training toilet appeared not to have been cleaned for an extended period. Investigators also noted a stark contrast between the children's living spaces and the parents' bedroom.
The affidavit stated that the parents' room had "nice bedding, the bed was made, there was no extreme clutter, and it was clean, unlike the remainder of the home."
Parents arrested, other children removed
The child's parents, Trevor Reichard-Hayes and Katherine Carter, have been arrested and are facing charges, including murder and neglect.

Two other children were also living in the house at the time. Authorities have since removed them, with one reportedly hospitalised due to severe malnutrition and dehydration.
