A protest by factory workers in Noida escalated into violence on Monday, with incidents of arson, vandalism and stone-pelting reported from industrial areas, including Phase 2 and Sector 60.
Visuals from the spot showed protesters damaging vehicles, including a police van, as authorities attempted to control the situation. The workers have been agitating over demands for higher wages and improved working conditions. Police reinforcements were rushed to the area to prevent further escalation, news agency ANI reported.

Protests over wages and working conditions
The unrest has been building over the past few days, with workers demanding a salary hike and better workplace standards. The trigger appears to be a recent move by the Haryana government to increase minimum wages for unskilled workers by 35 per cent, raising it from Rs 11,274 to Rs 15,220 per month.

Workers in Noida say they should receive similar pay, arguing that employees across the border are earning more for comparable work. They have also flagged concerns such as unsafe workplaces, lack of weekly offs, and absence of grievance redressal systems.
Security tightened in Delhi-NCR
Following the violence, security has been stepped up across the National Capital Region. Delhi Police has been placed on high alert, with additional personnel deployed at key entry points into Delhi.
Barricading has been intensified and vehicle checks are being carried out at major border points to prevent any spillover of unrest. "Delhi Police is fully alert and vigilant. Adequate force has been deployed at all strategic locations. No one will be allowed to breach law and order," a senior officer was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

Authorities added that strict monitoring is in place to ensure that no anti-social elements exploit the situation.
Government response and appeal for calm
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said workers should receive fair wages and safe working conditions, while also calling for strict action against those instigating violence.

"Those creating nuisance in the name of workers must face strict action and security must be beefed up in industrial areas," he said, warning of a possible "conspiracy to revive almost-dead Naxalism", reported NDTV.
Police officials said senior officers are on the ground and discussions with workers are ongoing. They added that minimal force is being used and urged people not to pay attention to rumours as efforts continue to restore order.
