Owning an electric vehicle for the long haul often raises one major question among drivers: how expensive does maintenance become after years of use? YouTuber Electric Vehicle Man recently offered an answer after taking his 186,000-mile Tesla Model S to a Tesla service centre with one simple instruction: fix every problem you can find.

The Model S, which previously served as a company vehicle and spent years covering long motorway journeys, had accumulated significant wear and tear over time. While the owner anticipated a lengthy repair list, the final cost still caught him off guard.

Multiple faults surfaced after years of heavy use

The Tesla owner admitted the vehicle was showing its age before the inspection even began.

Apart from needing a thorough cleaning, the car suffered from several mechanical and electrical issues that had gradually built up over years of extensive driving.

Technicians identified a faulty charge port sensor, damaged wiper linkage components and suspension-related problems that were causing uneven tyre wear. Several other smaller faults were also flagged during the inspection process.

The owner acknowledged that a vehicle approaching 200,000 miles would naturally require significant attention but expected the overall cost to remain lower.

A $4,000 bill and unfinished repairs

Once all the work was completed, Tesla handed over a bill totalling $4,041, or roughly £3,050.

Despite the sizeable expense, not every issue was fixed. The steering wheel remained slightly off-centre and an interior rattle had still not been addressed.

Reflecting on the experience, the owner said the cost was higher than anticipated and suggested that independent repair shops might have completed some of the work for less money than Tesla itself.

However, one positive emerged from the inspection.

Battery health remains a bright spot

Despite nearly 186,000 miles on the odometer, the vehicle's battery continued to perform well and showed no major signs of degradation.

For many long-term Tesla owners, battery longevity remains one of the biggest concerns, making this outcome encouraging.

Although a $4,000 repair bill may sound alarming, it is far from the most expensive automotive repair story seen recently.

A Hyundai owner in Florida reportedly paid around $12,000 after water damage caused by a spilled bottle, while automotive YouTuber Tyler Hoover, popularly known as Hoovies Garage, spent more than $200,000 repairing multiple vehicles throughout 2025.
