Portugal will aim to register their first win of the FIFA World Cup 2026 when they take on Uzbekistan in a key Group K encounter on Tuesday. After being held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo in their opening match, Roberto Martinez's side cannot afford another slip-up if they are to strengthen their chances of reaching the knockout stage.

Uzbekistan, meanwhile, are also searching for their first points of the tournament. The Central Asian nation suffered a 3-1 defeat against Colombia in their World Cup debut and now face one of the toughest tests in the group.

First-ever meeting between the two nations

Portugal and Uzbekistan have never met in a senior international fixture before, making this their first head-to-head clash. While Portugal arrives as one of Europe's established football powers, Uzbekistan are appearing in their maiden FIFA World Cup after creating history by becoming the first Central Asian nation to qualify for the tournament.

The experience gap between the two sides is significant, with Portugal having featured in multiple World Cups and major international tournaments over the last two decades.

Portugal seeks improvement after opening draw

Portugal dominated possession against DR Congo but failed to convert their control into a winning result. The draw left them with work to do in a competitive Group K that also includes Colombia.

Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to lead the attack once again, while Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha and Joao Neves will be tasked with controlling the midfield. Defender Ruben Dias is also likely to return to the starting lineup after missing the opening match.

Uzbekistan showed flashes of quality against Colombia, particularly through Abbosbek Fayzullaev, who scored the nation's first-ever World Cup goal. However, defensive errors proved costly as they slipped to defeat.

A positive result against Portugal would keep Uzbekistan's hopes of reaching the knockout rounds alive, while a loss could leave them facing an uphill battle heading into their final group game.

With both teams still chasing their first victory of the tournament, Tuesday's contest could play a major role in determining the Group K standings and the race for qualification to the Round of 32.
