Union Home Minister Amit Shah has opened up about his personal health journey, revealing that years of disciplined lifestyle changes helped him overcome diabetes-related health challenges, lose more than 20 kilograms and become free from allopathic medicines. His remarks, originally made during an event at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in Delhi on April 19, 2025, have resurfaced online and are gaining fresh attention.
Shah said his transformation began in May 2020 when he consciously decided to overhaul his daily habits. The senior BJP leader explained that consistent changes in his sleep schedule, hydration, food intake and exercise routine gradually improved his overall health.
How Amit Shah transformed his health
Hindustan Times mentioned that, speaking about his experience, Amit Shah said he had previously struggled with diabetes but managed to regain control of his health through discipline and consistency.
“I was diabetic earlier. I made a huge change in my life since May 2020 till today. I fixed my sleep, improved my water intake, diet and regular exercise. That has given me a lot,” he said.
According to Amit Shah, these changes eventually reduced his dependence on medicines and helped him achieve long-term health benefits.
He also stated that over the past four-and-a-half years, he had become completely free from all allopathic medicines.
More than weight loss, a change in overall well-being
According to the Hindustan Times, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the impact of these changes went beyond physical fitness. He noted that his ability to work, think and make decisions improved significantly after adopting healthier habits.
He explained that maintaining a proper routine enhanced his productivity and sharpened his mental focus, both of which are essential for handling demanding responsibilities.
The Home Minister also revealed that he had lost over 20 kilograms during this period, attributing the achievement entirely to sustainable lifestyle changes rather than quick-fix methods.
His comments have sparked discussions around the importance of preventive healthcare and how simple everyday habits can create lasting results over time.

Amit Shah's advice to young people
During his address, Amit Shah urged younger generations to prioritise both physical and mental health.
Hindustan Times noted that he stressed the importance of setting aside dedicated time every day for exercise and adequate sleep.
“Dedicate two hours of exercise for your body and six hours of sleep for your brain,” he advised.
Shah’s remarks arrive at a time when lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes, obesity and hypertension are increasingly affecting younger populations in India. His message focused on the idea that long-term discipline and healthier routines can significantly improve quality of life while reducing dependence on medication.
