Passengers aboard a Turkish Airlines flight from the United States faced an unexpected and unpleasant situation when sewage reportedly flooded parts of the aircraft during departure.
The incident occurred on a flight travelling from Denver to Istanbul, prompting the plane to return to the airport shortly after takeoff.
The flight turns back after takeoff
A Turkish Airlines flight departing from Denver International Airport was forced to return to the airport after a sewage-related issue developed on board. According to NDTV reports, the problem emerged shortly after takeoff as the aircraft was beginning its journey to Istanbul.

Passengers reportedly noticed a strong odour before crew members became aware of a more serious issue involving wastewater leaking inside the cabin.
Sewage reportedly enters the passenger area
Reports said sewage and faecal waste began leaking from a lavatory system and spread into parts of the aircraft. The situation created discomfort for passengers and crew, with the foul smell becoming difficult to ignore.
As the issue worsened, the flight crew decided it would be safer to return to Denver rather than continue the long-haul international journey.
The aircraft landed back at Denver International Airport without further incident.
Passengers describe the ordeal
Several passengers shared details of the experience on social media, describing unpleasant conditions inside the cabin as the leak continued.
One passenger reportedly wrote that the aircraft was "flooded with sewage", while another described the smell as overwhelming. Images and videos shared online appeared to show liquid on the floor of the aircraft cabin, as per NDTV.
The incident quickly attracted attention online, with many expressing disbelief that such a problem could occur during a commercial flight.
The airline arranges alternative travel
After returning to Denver, passengers were deplaned while airline staff assessed the situation. The aircraft was taken out of service for inspection and cleaning.
Turkish Airlines later arranged alternative travel plans for affected passengers. The airline also worked to address the technical issue before the aircraft could return to service.

Rare but disruptive aviation incident
While aircraft occasionally experience technical faults, sewage system failures are relatively uncommon. Such incidents can create operational challenges because of sanitation concerns and the need for extensive cleaning before a flight is cleared to operate again.
The Denver-Istanbul flight's return highlighted how even non-engine-related issues can force significant disruptions to airline schedules. Although the incident caused delays and inconvenience, the aircraft returned safely, and no injuries were reported.
