A string of unusual late-night incidents beneath the streets of New York City has left authorities searching for answers. The New York Police Department (NYPD) has launched an investigation after multiple videos surfaced online showing groups of men removing manhole covers, entering the city's sewer system and emerging hours later from underground tunnels.

The videos, filmed across parts of Brooklyn and Queens, have attracted widespread attention on social media and prompted concerns about public safety and security. According to police, emergency response teams were dispatched underground after the footage went viral.

Police find no threat underground

The NYPD said officers from its Emergency Services Unit inspected the sewer system to determine whether the individuals had left behind anything dangerous or suspicious. In a statement quoted by NBC News, police said no threats, suspicious materials or evidence of criminal activity were discovered during the search.

Authorities also coordinated with New York City's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), which manages the sewer network. Officials reported that inspections found no damage to critical infrastructure or sewer equipment. Despite the findings, investigators are continuing efforts to identify the individuals involved and determine their motives.

'Treasure hunters' emerge as possible explanation

According to CBS News New York, police sources believe the men may be "treasure hunters" exploring underground tunnels in search of valuables or historical artefacts.

One of the incidents reportedly involved a group of at least seven men who entered a manhole in Brooklyn's Flatbush neighbourhood late at night and reappeared several hours later.

The unusual activity has fuelled speculation online, with social media users debating whether the explorers were searching for hidden treasures, conducting urban exploration or pursuing other underground activities. So far, authorities have not publicly confirmed the group's intentions.

Officials warn of serious dangers

While the mystery continues, city officials have stressed that entering the sewer system is both illegal and highly dangerous.

A spokesperson for the Department of Environmental Protection told the BBC that sewers contain numerous hazards, including toxic gases, unstable surfaces, flooding risks and confined spaces that can quickly become life-threatening.

The department urged members of the public to avoid entering pipes, drains, catch basins, manholes or other underground infrastructure under any circumstances.

Viral curiosity meets public safety concerns

The incident highlights how social media can quickly transform unusual local events into national talking points.

Although investigators have found no evidence of a security threat, the viral videos have raised questions about access to public infrastructure and the risks associated with underground exploration.

For now, the mystery remains unresolved. Whether the men were treasure hunters, urban explorers or simply thrill-seekers, authorities are continuing to examine the footage as they work to identify everyone involved in the late-night sewer excursions.
