IIT Delhi has retained its position as India's highest-ranked education and research institution in the QS World University Rankings 2027, released on June 18, 2026. The institute secured the 118th position globally, improving by five places from its 123rd rank in the previous edition.
With this achievement, IIT Delhi has matched the highest global ranking ever attained by an Indian institution in the QS World University Rankings.
Strong gains in employer reputation and employment outcomes
According to the institute, improvements across several key indicators helped drive the rise in rankings.

One of the most notable gains came in the Employer Reputation category, where IIT Delhi climbed 11 positions to secure the 39th rank globally. The indicator measures how employers view graduates from institutions around the world and reflects the employability and industry readiness of students.

The institute also registered a significant jump in the Employment Outcomes metric, rising 60 places. This parameter assesses how effectively institutions prepare graduates for successful careers and leadership roles.
Research performance also improved, with IIT Delhi moving up 26 positions in Citations per Faculty, a measure that evaluates the impact and quality of academic research produced by faculty members.
Focus on global standards
Commenting on the achievement, Prof. Somnath Baidya Roy, Dean, Planning and Head, Ranking Cell, IIT Delhi, said, "IIT Delhi remains committed to the goal of providing world-class affordable technological education and becoming a preferred destination for scholars worldwide."
He added that recent curriculum reforms, infrastructure upgrades and growing international engagement are expected to further strengthen the institute's position in global rankings.

Significant rise over four years
The latest result marks a steady upward trajectory for IIT Delhi. Over the past four years, the institute has improved its standing by 79 places, moving from 197th rank in the QS World University Rankings 2024 to 118th in the 2027 edition.
The institute has also performed strongly in subject-specific rankings. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, disciplines such as Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering and Civil Engineering were placed among the world's top 50 subjects.
IIT Delhi also secured the 36th rank globally in the Engineering and Technology category, maintaining its position as India's leading institution in the field.
