NCERT has introduced a new Class 9 Mathematics textbook, Ganit Manjari, that places Indian mathematical heritage at the centre of its presentation while retaining core syllabus topics.

The book is a shift from older editions, with historical context, philosophical notes, and application-based learning woven into lessons on coordinates, numbers, algebra, area, probability, and sequences.

Ancient Indian maths legacy woven into modern lessons

NDTV claims that the textbook discusses the philosophical underpinnings of zero, connects the origin of the coordinate system to the Sindhu-Saraswati civilisation, and makes reference to the Vedanga Jyotisha.

It also mentions Indian mathematicians such as Aryabhata, Madhava of Sangamagrama, Brahmagupta, and Nilakantha Somayaji. The redesigned book also includes tasks that encourage critical and creative thinking, as well as the integration of classical mathematical knowledge and current education.

PTI reported that the 196-page textbook contains eight chapters and will be implemented from the 2026-27 academic session. The news agency said the new edition gives greater emphasis to indigenous contributions than the previous book, which largely focused on procedural learning and contained limited references to ancient Indian mathematics.

The revised version credits the Sindhu-Sarasvati civilisation with early “grid-based thinking” and links it to the evolution of coordinate geometry.

In the foreword, NCERT director Dinesh Prasad Saklani wrote that the textbook aims “to develop students' ability” in framing well-defined problems that can be addressed through mathematical reasoning. He added that it highlights “the rich history of mathematics in India, spanning thousands of years,” and said that learning about mathematical developments in India and across the world can help students develop “a deeper sense of cultural rootedness.”
