UGC releases list of 32 fake universities in India, Delhi tops with 12 cases

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has identified 32 universities across India that are operating without valid recognition and are not authorised to award legitimate degrees. According to the latest update as of February 2026, these institutions do not have the legal approval required under Indian higher education laws.

Delhi has the highest number of such institutions, with 12 fake universities listed in the national capital. Several other states also feature on the list, though in smaller numbers. The UGC has cautioned students and parents that degrees from these institutions are not valid for higher education, government jobs or professional opportunities.

The February 2026 update follows a similar advisory issued in 2025, when the commission released a list of fake universities to alert students during the admission season. Once again, the UGC has urged aspirants and guardians to carefully verify the recognition status of any university before taking admission.

The complete list of fake universities has been notified by the UGC to help prevent students from falling victim to fraudulent institutions.
