The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has launched the DigiYatra service at its terminal, only about two months after it started commercial operations. This brings the airport in line with the Civil Aviation Ministry’s plans to roll out the DigiYatra service across the country, joining five other airports that have joined the latest phase of the service. The private airport operator announced in a statement on Friday.
Remote inauguration streamed live inside the terminal
The inauguration ceremony was held remotely, live inside the airport terminal for passengers who were there. In a symbolic ceremony, three passengers accessed the DigiYatra e-gates and conducted a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the biometric entry points.

What DigiYatra means for flyers
The DigiYatra service uses facial recognition technology to allow passengers to travel contactlessly and paperlessly through key airport points. Passengers who are part of the service do not have to produce their documents physically to access the various airport points. Instead, they can use the e-gates where their identity is verified through facial recognition technology.

According to the airport operator, the service aims to reduce the time passengers spend waiting to access the airport and improve the overall travel experience while incorporating data privacy and security guidelines provided by the government.
The facility is part of a broader push by the Civil Aviation Ministry to introduce technology-driven solutions at airports across the country. For passengers opting for DigiYatra, they can register on the dedicated website and proceed to the biometric gates at the time of departure. If you would like to go with the conventional system, the existing manual system is still in place.
