Fourteen years after "Cocktail" looked at modern relationships through the prism of a complex love triangle, "Cocktail 2" offers viewers another interesting story set against the backdrop of a modern romance and commitment. Unfortunately, although the lead actors – Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna – give excellent performances, the movie cannot overcome the burden of a highly unrealistic storyline.
Produced by Homi Adajania with the participation of Maddock Films and Luv Films, "Cocktail 2" attempts to combine romantic elements, comedy, and emotional conflicts within the beautiful scenery of Sicily. Although the movie manages to offer a beautiful picture, it cannot be said about its plot.
The story follows Kunal (Shahid Kapoor), who has been in a long-lasting live-in relationship with Diya (Rashmika Mandanna) for 16 years. Things become very interesting when Diya convinces her ex-friend Ally (Kriti Sanon) to flirt with Kunal and test his loyalty.

Strong performances can't fully rescue a weak premise
However, the main flaw of the film comes in the form of a plot device, which oversimplifies complicated relationships and makes them a simple matter of trust and manipulation.
This movie script presents to the viewers several highly unlikely scenarios such as Diya being ready to trust her friend whom she has not seen for ten years and how easily Ally manages to become deeply involved in the life of the couple. Despite all of these drawbacks, the main cast of the film puts in a great deal of effort trying to make it exciting.
In particular, Shahid Kapoor offers a very reserved performance, adding stability to a conflicted character between two different relationships. At the same time, Kriti Sanon gives a charismatic portrayal of a free-spirited girl called Ally who is not willing to accept any restrictions in life. Rashmika Mandanna does a great job with her emotional scenes; however, her character gets little screen time in some crucial parts of the film.
The Sicilian portions stand out as some of the film's strongest moments, offering vibrant visuals and a breezy atmosphere that briefly masks the screenplay's flaws.
When style outshines substance
While Cocktail 2 benefits from lavish production values and scenic European backdrops, the film often prioritises aesthetics over emotional depth. The screenplay spends considerable time on romantic banter and relationship debates but offers few convincing explanations for the choices made by its central characters.
As the love triangle intensifies, the narrative leans heavily on misunderstandings and emotional impulsiveness, making several key developments difficult to believe. The film's attempts to balance humour, romance and drama result in uneven pacing, with some sequences feeling stretched while others rush through important emotional turning points.
The emotional conflicts remain largely confined to the characters themselves, making it difficult for viewers to become fully invested in their journeys. Several dramatic moments that should carry emotional weight end up feeling superficial because the writing does not adequately build towards them.
Visual appeal keeps the film afloat
Indeed, the visual appeal of the movie remains one of its key strengths. The sunny landscapes of Sicily, its vibrant nightlife and picturesque locations contribute to an element of escapism characteristic of this film.

In spite of some problems in the screenplay, the strong connection between the main characters keeps the audience engaged. Shahid Kapoor delivers a consistent performance, Kriti Sanon adds charm and freshness to her part, and Rashmika Mandanna adds credibility to the emotional moments of the film.
Nevertheless, as the story unfolds in Delhi and the emotions become stronger, the plot becomes based on the conversation of the characters without any significant development of their personalities. Thus, we get a film which remains partially interesting but fails to make use of its good starting point.
Cocktail 2 can be recommended to those who are in search of entertaining and visually pleasing movies with interesting performances of the main characters.
