Singer-composer Arijit Singh marked his 39th birthday on April 25 with fans reflecting on a year that dramatically reshaped his career. Months after announcing his exit from playback singing, the artist has re-emerged with an independent musical direction, signalling a decisive shift away from mainstream cinema.

Singh’s journey over the past year has been defined by both disruption and reinvention.

In January, Singh stunned the industry by declaring that he would no longer take up new playback assignments, bringing to a pause a career that had dominated Hindi film music for over a decade.

From film mainstay to independent voice

Singh made his debut in reality television shows and later gained popularity as a soundtrack artist in Bollywood, where his success flourished in the early 2010s. He gained recognition for singing the track Tum Hi Ho from Aashiqui 2, which earned him the Filmfare Award, placing him among the most popular voices in the Indian music industry.

Singh released hit songs in films including Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express, and Barfi!, among others. This ensured that his music dominated the online streaming charts from the late 2010s to early 2020s.

Nonetheless, Singh was experimenting with independent music even during the peak of his career. He launched his record label Oriyon Music in 2020, indicating his desire for more artistic freedom.

A quiet exit, followed by a return

In a recent post on Instagram, Singh expressed gratitude to his fans for their support and revealed that he was retiring from playback singing, which he referred to as “a wonderful journey.”

His retirement statement prompted many questions about what the future held for him. He cleared those doubts in April with the launch of Laiyaan, an indie song that highlights his desire for simplicity.

The song is written, recorded, and produced by RUTVXK and has vocals by Ruaa Kayy.

A new phase in a familiar voice

His latest venture reflects a larger trend taking place in India’s music industry, where musicians who have made their mark are moving towards self-expression through indie avenues.

Even as he continues to be one of the most streamed Indian artists internationally, his latest journey seems to reflect an intentional move away from the formulaic approach towards more personal storytelling.

The voice may remain the same. But the platform has changed.
