Kohli scripts history with 800th boundary in Indian Premier League, becomes first-ever to achieve milestone

The former Indian captain and modern-day great, Virat Kohli, has set a record-smashing 800 boundaries and become the first player to do so. Virat Kohli etched his name deeper into the history books on Friday, becoming the first player in IPL history to smash 800 boundaries. A loyalist of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru since the league's inception, he has played 274 matches and made 8989 runs with a strike rate of 133.77. Royal Challengers Bengaluru is having a decent season so far, every player has done their job with grace and perfection.

Friday evening witnessed a Virat Kohli show as the Royal Challengers Bengaluru successfully chased down their second-highest run. Batting first, the Gujarat Titans put the opening on a show as Shubman Gill and Sai Sudarshan formed a 128-run partnership in 76 balls, in which Gill only contributed 32 runs in 24 balls. Sai Sudarshan smashed his third century with the help of 5 over boundaries and 11 fours but the run fest came to an end as Hazlewood stopped the Chennai boy with a stunner.

The modern-day hero is not stopping and once again he proved why cricket still needs him. Virat Kohli has smashed 8 fours and 4 sixes to decorate his innings of 81 runs. His first boundary of the innings to Kagiso Rabada was the 800th boundary of his IPL career, the ball tore the mid-on to make him the first batter to reach the feat, and he also became the fourth player to reach the 300 sixes mark in the IPL.

With the successful run chase which also came because of the help of Devdutt Paddikal’s stunning 55 runs with a strike rate of 203.7 runs, the red brigade marched past the target of 206 runs with 7 balls to spare. This run chase took RCB to the second position and RCB strengthened their playoff chances with 10 points in 7 matches and also had a positive run rate of +1.101.

Who are the players behind him?

Other than Virat Kohli who stands at the summit of the IPL boundary charts, becoming the first player to breach the 800 fours milestone. He is followed by the prolific Shikhar Dhawan, who held the record for years with 768 boundaries. Australia’s David Warner remains the leading overseas representative in third place with 663 fours, closely pursued by the "Hitman" Rohit Sharma, who has dispatched 653 deliveries to the fence. Rounding out the top five is Ajinkya Rahane, whose classical strokeplay has accumulated 522 fours, maintaining a narrow lead over the retired Suresh Raina.
