India celebrated Rajinikanth's 75th birthday on December 12, 2025. The day marked special importance as it also marked the 50th anniversary of the actor. Millions of fans and prominent personalities from the film industry and politics paid tribute to the man who began as a bus conductor for a salary of ₹750 per month and eventually reached an esteemed position within the Indian film and media industry.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the wishes with: “Greetings to Thiru Rajinikanth Ji on the special occasion of his 75th birthday. His performances have captivated generations… This year has been notable because he completed 50 years in the world of films. Praying for his long and healthy life.”

Born as Shivaji Rao Gaekwad in 1950, Rajinikanth still continues to be an inspiration for everyone with his biographical story being incorporated into India’s cinematic success stories. Rajini initially worked as a coolie, carpenter, and bus conductor before getting an opportunity at a film institute in Madras. His life story now features in CBSE’s curriculum under the theme “Dignity of Work.”

But beyond the public milestones, there are parts of Rajinikanth’s life that even longtime admirers may not know.

As Thalaivar marks his entry into his 76th year, he still retains so much popularity. The 2025 release “Coolie” met with quite some success at the box office, and there are some very high expectations with “Jailer 2” as well. It will be followed by yet another massive collaboration as he has just signed a new venture with Kamal Haasan’s production house.

The 35-year-old actor took a tough call and opted for spirituality instead of getting involved in multiple major cinematic projects.

The end of the 1980s witnessed a situation wherein every director wanted Rajnikanth. Yet, he took prolonged breaks to visit the Himalayas, and this practice continues with him even today. These trips have molded his thinking and play an important role in making him disciplined.

His first acting role was not in Tamil cinema

Prior to Apoorva Raagangal, he acted in a kannada stage play called Mahabharata. It was his acting on stage that encouraged his friends and family to persuade him to get professional acting training.

Amitabh Bachchan’s cinematic works had an impact on his initial screen presence

Rajini has openly acknowledged that several of his iconic gestures and dialogue styles were inspired by Bachchan’s 1970s performances. His breakthrough Hindi films later included remakes of Bachchan hits.

Almost abandoned acting career in early 1980s

Health problems and emotional stress forced a temporary retreat. It was director S.P. Muthuraman and friend Raj Bahadur who encouraged him not to walk away. His return brought forth some of his most iconic works.
