The release of Tamil superstar Vijay’s much-anticipated farewell film Jana Nayagan has been postponed, the makers confirmed on Wednesday (January 7, 2026). The film, which was scheduled to hit theatres on January 9, will now release at a later date, yet to be announced.

The decision comes hours after the Madras High Court reserved orders on a writ petition filed by the film’s producers against the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for not issuing the censor certificate in time. The development effectively ruled out the possibility of a January 9 release.

In an official statement shared on X, the production banner KVN Productions said the postponement was due to circumstances beyond their control. “We deeply understand the anticipation and emotions surrounding this film. The new release date will be announced at the earliest,” the statement read, urging fans to remain patient.

CBFC objection leads to delay

According to court submissions, the makers had submitted the censor cut of Jana Nayagan to the CBFC on December 19. While the examining committee reportedly recommended a U/A 16+ certificate with certain cuts, one member of the committee later raised few objections, stating their concerns had not been adequately addressed.

After the complaint, the CBFC chairperson referred the film to a revising committee, which delayed the certification process. After hearing the arguments from both sides, the Madras High Court indicated that its order would likely be pronounced only on January 9, leaving insufficient time for certification and release on the same day.

The postponement has come as a major disappointment to Vijay’s fans, many of whom were eagerly waiting for the First Day First Show of what is being billed as the actor’s final film before he fully transitions into politics.

The makers have said an announcement regarding the revised release date will be made soon.
