The FIFA World Cup 2026 has become the highest-scoring edition in the tournament's history, with the ongoing competition surpassing the previous record set during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed on Thursday that 173 goals have already been scored in the tournament, eclipsing the previous record of 172 goals registered during the 2022 edition. With several matches still left to be played before the final on July 19, the tally is expected to rise further.

Sharing the milestone on Instagram, Infantino described the record as evidence of the attacking quality and entertainment value that have defined the tournament so far.

"173 goals and counting — a new record in FIFA World Cup history! Surpassing the previous highest of 172 goals from Qatar underscores the excitement and attacking prowess that have already made the 2026 FIFA World Cup so unforgettable," Infantino wrote.

Attacking football drives historic milestone

The FIFA World Cup 2026, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, has witnessed a series of high-scoring encounters throughout the group stage and knockout rounds.

According to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, the record reflects both the attacking approach adopted by teams and the quality of finishing displayed by players during the tournament.

"Congratulations to all the goalscorers and looking forward to many more goals as we move towards the final on Sunday, July 19, in New York New Jersey," he added.

The previous record of 172 goals was established during the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, which itself was widely regarded as one of the most entertaining editions of the tournament.

Cristiano Ronaldo also creates history

The latest scoring milestone comes just days after another historic achievement at the tournament.

Calling the achievement "incredible," the FIFA chief praised Ronaldo's longevity and impact on the sport.

With several knockout fixtures and the final still remaining, the FIFA World Cup 2026 now has an opportunity to set a benchmark that could stand for years to come.
