The FIFA World Cup trophy has become even more valuable off the pitch, with its gold content now estimated to be worth around ₹6.73 crore. According to data compiled by financial markets provider LSEG, the trophy’s intrinsic value has more than doubled since Argentina lifted it in Qatar in 2022, highlighting the dramatic rise in global gold prices over the past four years.
The increase comes at a time when gold continues to attract investors amid geopolitical tensions, trade uncertainties and concerns over slowing economic growth. While the trophy’s emotional and sporting significance remains beyond calculation, its material worth has witnessed a remarkable jump.
Gold rally pushes trophy value to new high
According to NDTV, the current FIFA World Cup trophy is crafted from 6.175 kilograms of 18-carat gold and contains nearly 4.93 kilograms of pure gold. Based on prevailing bullion prices, its gold content is now valued at approximately USD 713,000, or around ₹6.73 crore.
When Argentina won the World Cup in 2022, the same trophy carried an estimated value of about USD 277,000. The contrast becomes even starker when compared to 1974, when the current design was introduced, and its gold content was worth only around USD 25,000.
Analysts attribute the sharp increase to a prolonged rally in gold markets. Investors worldwide have increasingly turned to the precious metal as a safe-haven asset during periods of global instability.

No sporting trophy comes close
According to NDTV, the FIFA World Cup trophy remains unmatched among major sporting prizes in terms of raw material value. Unlike most trophies, which are primarily made of silver or plated metals, the World Cup prize contains a significant amount of gold.
Europe’s most prestigious club football trophies, including the UEFA Champions League and Europa League trophies, are made from sterling silver and have considerably lower melt values. Even some of the most famous trophies in American sports fall well short of the World Cup trophy’s worth.
The Borg-Warner Trophy, awarded to Indianapolis 500 winners, is among the most valuable in the United States because of its large silver content, yet it remains significantly less valuable than football’s ultimate prize.

A symbol whose true value goes beyond money
According to NDTV, despite the soaring gold valuation, experts note that the World Cup trophy’s actual worth cannot be measured purely in financial terms. For players, nations and supporters, lifting the trophy represents the pinnacle of sporting achievement.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, currently underway in the United States, has already generated global attention with its expanded 48-team format. While gold prices may continue to fluctuate, the prestige associated with the trophy remains priceless for every footballer dreaming of becoming a world champion.
