Germany's impressive start to the FIFA World Cup 2026 has suffered a significant setback after defender Nico Schlotterbeck was officially ruled out of the remainder of the tournament with an ankle injury.

The Borussia Dortmund centre-back sustained ligament damage in his left ankle during Germany's 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast at Toronto's BMO Field on June 20. The German Football Association confirmed that medical examinations carried out on Sunday revealed an injury serious enough to keep the 26-year-old out of action for several months.

Despite being ruled out, Schlotterbeck will remain with the German squad in the United States for the time being.

Germany lose a key figure in defence

According to News 18, Schlotterbeck had established himself as one of Julian Nagelsmann's most trusted players heading into the tournament.

He started Germany's opening two group-stage matches and even contributed offensively by scoring in Germany's emphatic 7-1 victory over Curacao in their tournament opener.

The defender was forced off at half-time against Ivory Coast and replaced by veteran centre-back Antonio Rudiger.

His absence now leaves Germany without one of its most versatile defenders, particularly someone capable of initiating attacks from deep positions.

Julian Nagelsmann calls it a massive loss

According to News 18, Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann admitted the injury was a painful blow for the squad.

"We'll really miss Schlotti on the field as an outstanding defender, especially his excellent build-up play," Nagelsmann said.

"It could have been his World Cup."

The German coach also highlighted Schlotterbeck's positive influence within the dressing room.

"We all tried to cheer him up yesterday. Luckily, he's a very positive guy who is already looking ahead. It's a good sign that he is staying here with the team for now because he also has an impact off the field," he added.

Rudiger expected to take charge in defence

According to News 18, Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger is now expected to assume a more prominent role in Germany's backline when they face Ecuador in their final Group E fixture on June 25 at MetLife Stadium.

Nagelsmann, however, remains confident in his available defensive options.

"Despite his absence, we're still very well placed in central defence for the World Cup with Jonathan Tah, Antonio Rudiger, Waldemar Anton and Malick Thiaw," he said.

Beyond the World Cup, Schlotterbeck's injury could also affect Borussia Dortmund, with the several-month recovery timeline putting the beginning of the next club season in doubt.
