The United States has cleared a proposed $482.2 million military support package for India’s Apache attack helicopters and M777A2 ultra-light howitzers, according to notifications issued by the Defence Security Cooperation Agency, which oversees the US Foreign Military Sales programme.

The notification was published in the Federal Register on June 17, following a May 18 communication from the US State Department to Congress on the possible sale of sustainment services and related equipment.

The package is aimed at long-term support rather than fresh procurement and is intended to keep both platforms operational and ready for use.

The nuts, bolts and battlefield arithmetic

The support package is split between two existing Indian military systems. The M777A2 howitzer programme has been assigned an estimated value of $230 million, while Apache sustainment support is valued at $198.2 million.

The services sought for the artillery system include spare parts, repair and return, training, technical assistance, field service representatives, depot capability and other logistics support.

For the Apache fleet, the package includes engineering support, technical and logistics services, technical data and publications, personnel training and related programme support. The Indian Army operates both systems, with the M777A2 used for artillery mobility in difficult terrain and the AH-64E Apache used for precision strike and battlefield support.

The alliance acquires another layer

The principal contractors named in the notifications are Boeing and Lockheed Martin for the Apache support package and BAE Systems for the M777 sustainment programme.

The US Department of Defence said the proposed sale would support Washington’s foreign policy and national security objectives by strengthening the US-India strategic relationship. It also said the package would help India improve its capability to meet current and future threats, strengthen homeland defence and deter regional threats.

In the language used by the Pentagon, “It will help improve the security of a major defence partner,” a line that underlines the strategic framing of the deal.

The long game of military readiness

The clearance comes as India continues to invest in keeping imported frontline systems mission-ready while also pushing for greater self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

Sustainment remains a major cost centre for advanced platforms acquired through foreign military channels. The latest package reinforces the depth of India-US defence cooperation and reflects the continuing importance of maintenance, training and logistics support in long-term military capability.
