BJP assumes mayoral position in Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation

The BJP created history in Kerala as its candidate VV Rajesh became the first BJP mayor in the state, winning the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation mayoral vote with 51 votes.

BJP has created a milestone in Kerala politics. For the first time, a BJP candidate assumed the position of mayor of a municipality in Kerala. BJP won in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation in the recently concluded local elections in Kerala. BJP had almost touched the magic figure to capture the corporation. As a result, voting took place on Friday, where BJP candidate VV Rajesh won and cleared the path to assume the mayor's position by securing 51 votes.

How many votes did the mayor secure?

VV Rajesh is the secretary of Kerala BJP and a councillor of Kodungallur. He has assumed the mayor's position of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. He received votes from 50 BJP councillors and one independent member of the municipal assembly. The UDF candidate received 17 votes, while the LDF candidate received 29 votes.

Local body polls in Kerala

Local body elections in Kerala were held on December 9 and 11. The Congress-led UDF won in most urban and rural areas, while the CPI(M)-led LDF's hold diminished substantially. A major change occurred in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, which had been under LDF control for 45 years. This time, the BJP has assumed power. Congress's Shashi Tharoor is the MP of Thiruvananthapuram.
