Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta has strongly criticised the opposition’s attempt to remove Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, calling the move “ill-conceived” and harmful to parliamentary traditions.

In a letter addressed to Birla, Gupta said the neutrality of the Speaker is central to India’s parliamentary democracy and urged political parties to respect constitutional institutions. He emphasised that the office of the Speaker must remain above partisan politics and should not be targeted for political reasons. The remarks came after opposition parties brought a resolution in the Lok Sabha seeking Birla’s removal, alleging bias in the conduct of House proceedings. The proposal triggered a heated debate in Parliament between treasury benches and opposition members. Gupta said such attempts weaken democratic institutions and warned that parliamentary positions must be treated with dignity and respect regardless of political differences.

Motion defeated in Lok Sabha after heated debate

The resolution seeking the removal of Om Birla was eventually defeated in the Lok Sabha through a voice vote after a long and intense debate in the House. The motion had been introduced by opposition MPs who accused the Speaker of favouring the ruling party during parliamentary proceedings. However, members of the ruling coalition rejected these allegations and defended Birla’s conduct as impartial.

During the debate, senior leaders of the government argued that the move was unprecedented in recent decades and accused the opposition of attempting to undermine parliamentary norms. The discussion lasted several hours and saw sharp exchanges between leaders from both sides of the aisle. Following the defeat of the resolution, Birla continued in his role as Lok Sabha Speaker, while political reactions from leaders across the country continued to emerge regarding the controversy.
