The Delhi government is considering building a new bridge over the Yamuna to improve connectivity between east Delhi and the central parts of the city. The proposal is still at an early stage, with authorities studying possible locations and feasibility.
New Yamuna bridge planned to ease traffic congestion
According to the Times of India, officials are exploring two main options: either replacing the ageing Old Iron Bridge (Loha Pul) or constructing a new bridge near the Signature Bridge. A detailed study will examine the stretch between Wazirabad and Kalindi Kunj, focusing on traffic flow, congestion points and technical challenges. The aim is to reduce traffic pressure and improve movement between northeast, north and central Delhi. The existing Loha Pul is considered outdated, and plans to divert railway traffic from it could open the door for its redevelopment or replacement. Alongside this, the government is also planning a four-kilometre elevated corridor along Trunk Drain 1. This road is expected to ease congestion on Swami Dayanand Marg, a key route connecting Anand Vihar and Shahdara, which is often heavily crowded.

Gandhi Nagar market set for long-awaited upgrade
The government is also reviving plans to redevelop Gandhi Nagar market, one of Asia’s largest wholesale garment hubs. A consultant has been appointed to prepare a detailed redevelopment plan for the area. Despite its economic importance, the market currently suffers from poor infrastructure, including inadequate roads, drainage, sanitation and basic facilities. The redevelopment aims to improve both trader and visitor experience while boosting business activity in the region.

Officials said the plan will address long-standing demands from traders who have been seeking better civic amenities for years. The move is also part of a broader push to develop the Trans-Yamuna region and bring it on par with other parts of Delhi. These proposals are expected to be discussed further, with possible budget allocations in the upcoming session. If implemented, they could significantly improve infrastructure, reduce congestion and support economic growth in East Delhi.
