OpenAI has announced that it will acquire Astral, a company known for building widely used Python developer tools. The deal is aimed at strengthening OpenAI’s position in the fast-growing AI coding tools market, where competition is intensifying.

OpenAI strengthens coding ecosystem with Astral deal

Astral’s tools are already used by millions of developers and are designed to improve the speed and reliability of Python programming. By bringing these tools into its ecosystem, OpenAI plans to integrate them with its AI coding system, Codex, which was launched as an AI-powered coding assistant and has seen rapid growth, with more than 2 million weekly active users. The platform helps developers write code, fix bugs and understand large codebases more efficiently. As part of the acquisition, Astral’s team will join OpenAI’s Codex division, allowing deeper integration of real-world developer tools into AI-driven workflows.

Move aimed at countering rising competition from Anthropic

The acquisition comes at a time when competition in AI coding tools is heating up, especially from companies like Anthropic. Its product, Claude Code, has been gaining popularity among developers, putting pressure on OpenAI to improve its offerings. Experts say this move shows OpenAI’s shift from just providing AI models to building a full developer ecosystem. By owning both the AI and the underlying tools developers use daily, OpenAI aims to create a more powerful and seamless coding experience.

Importantly, Astral’s open-source tools are expected to continue being supported even after the acquisition, which could help maintain trust among developers who rely on them. The deal highlights a larger trend in the tech industry, where companies are racing to control not just AI models but the entire software development workflow. For OpenAI, this acquisition is a strategic step to stay competitive and expand its influence in the developer community.
