RG Kar Hospital under fire as man dies after being trapped in lift for nearly an hour

A Dum Dum man, who had come to RG Kar Hospital’s trauma care centre for his son’s treatment, died after being trapped in a malfunctioning lift, sparking outrage over alleged delays in rescue.

A tragic incident occurred at the trauma care building of RG Kar Hospital. A man died under tragic circumstances at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in North Kolkata on Friday morning after being trapped inside a lift in the trauma care building. The deceased has been identified as Arup Bandyopadhyay of Dum Dum in North 24 Parganas. He had come to the hospital with his wife and young son, whose surgery to fix a fractured hand was scheduled.

It is said that the deceased entered the lift with his family while moving inside the building for treatment-related purposes. During the movement of the lift, the equipment malfunctioned.rocedures. The lift reportedly malfunctioned during the journey.

Lift malfunction and entrapment

According to the eyewitnesses and the family themselves, the lift lost control, skipped the floors it was meant to reach, and went straight to the basement floor before getting stuck. The doors of the lift failed to open, trapping the family inside.

There was no operator of the lift at the time of the incident, according to the claims of the witnesses. The patients inside the lift cried for help, and the attention of the patients’ relatives was drawn.

Delay in rescue, death confirmed later

It is claimed by the relatives of the deceased that despite repeated efforts to inform the hospital authorities about the situation, there was a considerable delay in the rescue operations. It took nearly an hour for the lift to be opened.

When the door was finally forced open, Bandyopadhyay was found unresponsive. He was later declared dead by the doctors. The exact cause of death is yet to be confirmed. However, the suspicion is of suffocation or a heart attack.

Protests and police action

This incident has created tension at the hospital. The family members of the deceased and others have staged a protest against the hospital authorities. The police from Tala police station have been called to the spot to take care of the situation.

An investigation is underway to ascertain the cause of the incident. It is yet to be confirmed if the cause of the incident is a mechanical fault or a matter of poor maintenance. However, the exact cause of the delay in the rescue operations is yet to be mentioned by the authorities.
