Delhi has stepped into April with a noticeable shift in weather, as rain and cooler conditions begin to take hold across the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted rain to continue over Delhi from Friday, i.e., April 3, through the weekend.

Parts of the capital have been receiving rainfall since Tuesday night, which continued through Wednesday morning. According to IMD, the minimum temperature was recorded at 16.8 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung, which is the base station. This is 2.6 degrees lower than the previous day and two degrees lower than normal.

The maximum temperature remained at 33.5 degrees Celsius, slightly below the average for the season. Although no rain was recorded at Safdarjung during the early hours, other areas received rainfall. Lodhi Road received 6.4 mm of rain between late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. The Ridge received 2.6 mm of rain, while Ayanagar received 6.8 mm of rain.

More rain expected till early next week

Weather experts say that the situation will be the same in the coming days due to the impact of back-to-back western disturbances.

Delhi will experience considerable rainfall on Friday and Saturday. Intermittent rain might persist until April 8 or 9. Clouds and light rain might persist in the coming days, causing mild and varying weather conditions.

Yellow alert and wind activity

The IMD has forecast a yellow alert for Saturday. Light rain or drizzle is likely along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds that can reach up to 40 kmph.

There is a possibility of the temperature rising slightly on Thursday. The maximum temperature is likely to range between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius because of cloudy conditions. However, the temperature is likely to fall over the weekend, with the maximum temperature ranging between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature is likely to fall between 16 and 18 degrees early next week.

Air quality improves

Alongside the rainfall, there has been a positive change in the quality of air in Delhi. Delhi’s air quality, measured by the 24-hour average AQI, was recorded to be 113 on Wednesday. This was a decrease from the 171 recorded the day before. This places the air quality in the moderate zone.
