Aaron Rai beats McIlroy, Rahm to claim historic PGA Championship title

Aaron Rai defeated Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm to win the 2026 PGA Championship and secure the first major title of his career.

Aaron Rai produced the performance of his life to win the 2026 PGA Championship, defeating some of golf’s biggest stars at Aronimink Golf Club. The English golfer stayed calm under pressure and secured his first major title with a brilliant final-round display against the likes of Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas.

Rai shines in tense final round

Rai started the final day among several players fighting for the title, but he delivered when it mattered most. The 31-year-old shot a five-under 65 to move ahead of the field and take control of the tournament.

One of the key moments came on the 17th hole when Rai made a huge birdie putt from long distance to strengthen his lead. He eventually finished three shots ahead of Jon Rahm and Alex Smalley to seal a memorable victory.

Rory McIlroy remained in contention for most of the final round but dropped crucial shots on the back nine. Justin Thomas also made a strong late push, but Rai stayed composed throughout the closing holes.

Historic win for Aaron Rai

The victory was a major milestone in Rai’s career. He became the first English golfer in more than a century to win the PGA Championship and also the first player of Indian heritage to win a men’s major title.

Before this tournament, Rai was not considered one of the favourites. He had won only one PGA Tour title and entered the championship as a major outsider. However, his consistency and calm approach helped him outperform some of the world’s top-ranked golfers.

Rai is well known for his simple personality and unique habits, including wearing two gloves and using iron covers on his clubs. After the victory, many players praised his discipline and humble nature.
