The West Bengal government has revised the upper age limit for recruitment to state services by amending the West Bengal Services (Raising of Age Limit) Rules, 1981.
In a notification issued by the Finance Departmentâs Audit Branch on May 16, the state said the cap for Group A posts âshall be raised to 41 years," with Group B posts moving to 44 years and Group C and Group D posts to 45 years.

A small but telling shift for applicants
The order also makes clear that where a post or service already has an upper age limit above 41 years, that higher limit will continue unchanged.
It adds another clause for recruitment made under the West Bengal Regulation of Recruitment in State Statutory Bodies, Government Companies, and Local Authorities Act, 1999, saying that if such appointments are not routed through the Public Service Commission, West Bengal, the upper age limit âshall be 45 years.â

A backdated order
The notification states that the revised rule âshall be deemed to have come into forceâ from May 11, 2026, even though it was formally issued on May 16.
It was released from Nabanna in Howrah and signed by P.K. Mishra, additional chief secretary to the government of West Bengal. The second page of the order shows it was circulated to senior officials, including the accountant general, the public service commission, district magistrates, police chiefs, treasury officers, and departmental secretaries.

More elbow room for aspirants
The change applies across categories of state government recruitment and marks a fresh amendment to the long-running age limit rules in the state.
With the new ceiling now fixed at 41 years for Group A, 44 for Group B, and 45 for Group C and Group D, the order widens the window for applicants who had previously crossed the earlier limit.
